The eminent jurist breathed his last at the Max Hospital where he was admitted following a heart attack. His body was cremated this morning, family members said.

Justice Pathak was appointed as one-man panel in November 2005 to inquire into alleged Indian links in the Oil-for-Food programme. On August 3, 2006, he submitted his 90-page report which indicted suspended Congress leader and former External Affairs Minister Natwar Singh. Son of Gopal Swarup Pathak, former Vice-President of India, he was born in Allahabad on November 25, 1925. He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Allahabad High Court in 1962 and became the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court on March 18, 1972.

Justice Pathak was elevated to the Supreme Court in February 1978 and became the Chief Justice of India on December 21, 1986. He relinquished the post in June 1989 after he was appointed a Judge of the International Court of Justice.

Condoling his death, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh described him as “a man of great learning and wisdom”. He was also a man of “unimpeachable integrity”, he said.

Terming him as an eminent jurist, President Pratibha Patil condoled the death of Justice Pathak and conveyed her condolences to the bereaved family.
