Former deputy CM quits Cong

Two days after holding a public meeting of disgruntled Congress workers in Ahmedabad, dissident Congress leader and former deputy chief minister Narhari Amin on Tuesday quit the party and relinquished the posts he held in it.

Considered the Patel face of Congress in the state, Amin had been sulking for the past one week after being denied a ticket from Gandhinagar South constituency.

Gathering around 5,000 supporters, many of whom later returned to the Congress, Amin had said earlier he would not work for Congress candidates in the upcoming elections.

Amin was a member of Congress's Core Committee for the elections and headed a party committee formed to woo urban voters. Amin is also a former president of the Gujarat Cricket Association and vice-president of Board of Cricket Control of India.

Six other Congress leaders resigned along with Amin. They are Jayantilal Parmar, Hitesh Patel, Ashish Amin, Dashrath Patel, R C Patel and Digvijaysinh Gohil. While Parmar and Hitesh Patel were spokespersons of the state Congress, Ashish Amin was the general secretary. Dashrath Patel was the president of Kisan Cell of the state Congress and R C Patel was the vice-president of Ahmedabad City Congress. Gohil was president of Adhyapak Cell of Congress.

"All seven of us have resigned from the primary membership and other party posts of the Congress. One of us, Hitesh Patel, went and handed over the resignations to GPCC president Arjun Modhwadia in person," Amin told The Indian Express.

"Right now, I am meeting my supporters who are pouring in from all parts of the state. I am getting their opinions and suggestions. We will decide the future course of action by tomorrow," Amin said.

Asked if he was going to join any other party, Amin evaded a direct reply. "We will decide it tomorrow," he said. Modhwadia could not be reached despite repeated attempts.
