A statement from a former CWG Organising Committee member against Lalit Bhanot and V K Verma helped the CBI in nailing the two in connection with irregularities in awarding a contract to supply timing, scoring and result (TSR) systems to a Switzerland-based firm for Rs 107 crore.
Sujit Panigrahi, who was then working as ADG (Technology),had red-flagged the contract awarded to the Swiss firm in 2009. But OC officials, including Bhanot and Verma, disqualified the other firms at the pre-qualification stage and got the contract cleared in favour of Swiss Timings Ltd. Panigrahi resigned from the OC in 2009.
In his statement,Panigrahi said that he repeatedly raised objections to awarding the deal to the Swiss firm, which lacked on technical aspects, but his pleas were ignored.
