The national memorial of Mahamana Madan Mohan Malaviya was inaugurated by former president A P J Abdul Kalam at 53, Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Marg, on Thursday.
Distinguished alumni of the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) attended the function held on the 147th birth anniversary of Madan Mohan Malaviya, freedom fighter and founder of BHU. BHU alumni association and the Mahamana Malaviya Mission came together to build the memorial.
Chancellor of BHU Karan Singh and former governor of Assam Bishnu Narayan Singh, a BHU alumnus, were the guests of honour at the ceremony.
Highlighting that education was essential for the development of the country, Dr Kalam exhorted the gathering to learn from the life of Madan Mohan Malaviya. “Righteousness and purity of life that we imbibe from education finally leads to order in the nation and peace in the world,” he said.
“Capacity building initiative comes from inculcating the spirit of enquiry in a child, with creativity and the use of technology enhancing the capability and inculcation of entrepreneurial skills to enable them to become lifelong earners,” he added.
The venue had an exhibition on the life of Madan Mohan Malaviya, highlighting his
contribution to the freedom movement, the Congress and the creation of BHU.
The building houses a seminar hall and fully-equipped
living quarters.
Pannalal Jaiswal, president of the Malaviya Mission, said the mission spreads the teachings of Malaviya, Aurobindo and Vivekananda.
