FOSWAC demands revoking of UT’s ‘disturbed area’ tag

The Federation of Sectors Welfare Association Chandigarh (FOSWAC) in a meeting held on Sunday in Chandigarh unanimously resolved that the Disturbed Areas Act be revoked from Chandigarh. The members further resolved that the post of the Chief Commissioner be revived in the city to provide better accessibility to the common people for the redressal of their grievances till such time as a Legislative Assembly is constituted.

The meeting of FOSWAC was held in Sector 8 and attended by 40 representatives of different associations. The demand for the revival of the post of Chief Commissioner in the city had been taken up by the Congress as well during the visit of P Chidambaram when he was the Home Minister. It has been felt that the administration issues of the city will be better handled if the post of the Chief Commissioner is revived and the duties be separated from those of the already existing post of the UT administrator.

The members expressed concern about the delay in the execution of several projects of public interest and slow pace of development works by the Administration. These include providing civic amenities in the thickly populated sectors from 48 to 61, regularization of need-based changes in CHB flats, addressing the problems of traffic congestion and parking space and implementation of the Right to Service Act and Model Rent Control Act. FOSWAC members also expressed concern over the law and order situation in the city.
