Four die of lepto in Surat

Four labourers from Surat died of leptospirosis on Friday night, while 15 more suspected patients were admitted to the New Civil Hospital.

However, the mortality rate of farm labourers has gone down due to less rainfall this year when the disease has claimed 16 lives in south Gujarat so far.

The four deceased have been identified as Kanku Chaudhary (50), resident of Valod taluka in Tapi district, Lalu Bhagat (43), resident of Valsad town, Daksha Dhodhiya (35), a resident of Vyara in Tapi district and Raju Harpati (36), resident of Mahuva in Surat district.

However, till now 47 patients underwent treatment in New Civil Hospital.

Farmers working in waterlogged fields are vulnerable to leptospirosis, which is transmitted to humans usually through urine discharged by animals in fields.

Sources in the hospital said among 16 deaths, eight were from Tapi district, seven were from Surat district while one was reported from Valsad district.

New Civil Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr M K Wadhel said, "We have worked hard to spread awareness among the farm labourers in different talukas of south Gujarat regarding the disease. The mortality rates have gone down this year and we are trying our level best to save life of every farm labourer."
