Four held for assault on fellow student

Four 19-year-old students from SIWS College were arrested by the Matunga police on Tuesday for assaulting and robbing a fellow student.

Four 19-year-old students from SIWS College were arrested by the Matunga police on Tuesday for assaulting and robbing a fellow student. The police said that the complainant and the accused belong to two rival student groups in the college and have had fights in the past.

Around 11.45 on Monday morning,an 18-year-old student was about to enter the college when the four accused accosted him near the front gate. “The accused were carrying cycle chains and rods and assaulted the student. When the student’s friend tried to intervene,he was assaulted too and warned to ‘stay away if he cared for his life’.

According to the victim’s statement,they had also snatched his gold chain worth Rs 18,000 and took away his cell phone worth Rs 2000. The four boys then forced him into a taxi and took him to Dharavi where they continued to thrash him,” said Senior Police Inspector Sunil Deshmukh of the Matunga police station.

The victim in his statement said that the accused had referred to an incident two days back when one of the boys in their group had been bashed up. They suspected that he was involved in the assault on their gang member.

The police nabbed the four on Tuesday noon from their residence in Dharavi. The victim’s father is an Air India employee and the family stays at the official quarters at Kalina.

“There are several such gangs in various colleges,” said Deshmukh.
