  • This was supposed to be a big week for Anand Jon. The fashion designer whom Newsweek earlier this year put on its “Who to watch in 2007” list was about to unveil a new line during Los Angeles Fashion Week. Instead, the headlines are focused on his arrest in Beverly Hills for alleged sexual assault.

On Monday, prosecutors added 13 criminal charges. The additional charges involve four new women who have accused Jon of assault, bringing the total number of alleged victims to seven. Jon, 33, who has dressed celebrities including Paris Hilton, was last week charged with rape and a string of sex crimes on three people — two women and a 15-year-old girl.

“He lured these girls to be models and once here sexually assaulted them,” said Jane Robison, a District Attorney’s spokeswoman. “This is ongoing, and we believe there may be numerous additional victims.” The complaint alleges that the crimes occurred between March 2004 and March 2007. Authorities in New York also have opened an investigation into whether the designer assaulted women there, Robison said.

Jon’s attorney, Ronald Richards, said the alleged victims are models who made false claims against him because he refused to employ them to the extent they wanted. Jon, whose legal name is Anand Jon Alexander, will appear in Los Angeles Superior Court on April 4 for arraignment.

Jon was scheduled to debut his Atomize Collection during Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios. The new ready-to-wear line features the designer’s jeans and was seen as the next step in expanding his fashion business.

Amid the tabloid clippings, there is an air of mystery around Jon. He was born in India, and was a fixture on the Miami social scene in the 1990s where, according to Newsweek, he met designer Giorgio Versace. Jon credits Versace for getting him into the fashion business.

Beverly Hills police have been investigating accusation of sexual assault involving Jon for three years. He was initially charged on March 13 with seven counts, including forcible rape, lewd act upon a child, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, sexual battery by restraint and attempted forcible oral copulation.

Beverly Hills police Lt. Mitch McCann said while most of the reported victims were in the early 20s and teens when the alleged assaults took place, at least two were minors when the conducted occurred.
