The LT Marg police on Thursday arrested four men for posing as police officers and trying to extort money from a businessman in Bhuleshwar. The arrested include Arivind Jaganath Sawant (67),Vinayak Inamdar (45),Anil Khebude (52),both from Kolhapur, and Dattaray Pandhre (50) of Tasgaon (Sangli).

On Thursday afternoon, the four, dressed in formal clothes, entered the Jai Hind building in Bhuleshwar in a Skoda car with an amber beacon and began enquiring about an “accused” with the residents. Vishal Vinod Kumar Leela, who was at home with his mother and a domestic help, asked them what they wanted as the four were standing outside his office in the neighbouring apartment.

“They said they were from the Vigilance Department and wanted to know whether Vishal knew a person named Vinod Leela. He told them Vinod was his father. The men told him that they had arrested a terrorist a few days ago who had revealed that Vinod was a “hawala” agent. The men then barged into Vishal’s house and ransacked it,pretending to be searching for proof and documents,” said Anil Kumbhare, deputy commissioner of police (zone II).

As Vishal panicked, they gave him an option to cough up Rs 20 lakh to hush up the case. A fruit horticulturist and businessman,Vishal called up his father. “His father told Vishal to call the police,” Kumbhare said.

The police arrived soon and arrested the four men. “One of the men,Sawant, told us that he was a bureau chief of a local newspaper. We are finding out whether the car they used was stolen,” Kumbhare added.
