Four years after setting up solid waste plant,UT back to square one

Mayor Raj Bala Malik,along with Additional Commissioner Sunil Bhatia and councillors Davesh Moudgil and Surinder Bahga,last week went to a meeting in Nagpur at National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI). The tour had generated controversy back home with Congress councillors complaining that neither any one of them nor the chairman or any member of the sanitation committee was taken along.

Within days of returning from NEERI,a proposal for hiring the consultancy was prepared and made part of the agenda for the meeting of the General House on October 26.

Former councillor Chander Mukhi Sharma said: “Hiring another consultancy is a sheer waste of money. The same things had been studied before the garbage processing plant was set up. A report was also prepared. If the MC needs to hire a consultancy by paying such a huge amount,it should be accepted that the present system has failed.”

Councillor Pardeep Chhabra said that there was no justification in hiring another consultancy firm when similar studies were conducted just a few years back. He said that a detailed discussion would be held once the proposal comes up in the House Meeting.

Justifying the proposal Surinder Bahga said: “Keeping in view of the city’s needs,a consultancy form should be hired. It will give an indepth analysis of the garbage content and suggest ways to dispose off different kinds of garbage.”
