Frame policy to improve condition of vendors: HC

The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Friday directed the Chandigarh Administration to frame a policy to improve the condition of street hawkers and vendors.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Friday directed the Chandigarh Administration to frame a policy to improve the condition of street hawkers and vendors. Rather than uprooting and challaning them, the Court urged the Chandigarh Administration to frame a policy to regularise them.

The direction was passed during the resumed hearing of a petition demanding directions for a policy for street hawkers. Peeved over sheer inaction by the Chandigarh Administration despite repeated orders, the High Court had summoned the UT home secretary.

As directed, the home secretary was present in Court on Friday. The Bench asked the home secretary to look into the matter and set an example by being the first in the country to formulate a policy. The Home Secretary assured the Court that appropriate decision will be taken in this regard. The case was adjourned after the Court gave the Administration two months time to draft a suitable policy.
