  • Genevieve Gomes , the eldest daughter of Francis Gomes-he had been arrested and later released on bail for confining his wife and two daughters for several years-now plans to submit an application in a Thane court to summon her father so as to make him appear for mental health tests.

The Thane court had directed the Thane jail authorities to take Gomes to KEM Hospital in Parel for mental health tests after Genevieve had submitted an application in the court on October 8, appealing that her father was mentally unsound and that he should be treated for mental illness. However, on the same day, Gomes was granted bail by a Vasai magistrate court and he has been absconding since his release.

Nandkumar Rajurkar, the lawyer representing Genevieve, said, “We might submit another application in the Thane court appealing it to summon Gomes and send him to KEM for mental health tests since it could not be done the last time as the jail authorities had to release him as per the orders by the Vasai magistrate court.” Gomes, unemployed since he lost his job in a mill a decade ago, had allegedly kept his family locked in their flat at Neelamber Society in Vasai (West) since 2002 as he feared that his three daughters would get raped, if they ventured out.

Though Genevieve had been rescued in June after some NGO activists got to know about her situation99 through some hospital authorities where she was admitted for her failing health, the rest of the family was rescued on September 29 when a local NGO came to know about their confinement and informed the Manikpur police.
