  • As the two joint-venture companies formed for the modernisation of Delhi and Mumbai airports meet on Wednesday with the Civil Aviation Ministry moving swiftly to hand over both the airports to private players by April-end, a five-member team from Fraport, which partners GMR for Delhi airport, will land here on May 1 to set up base and take stock of the Delhi airport.

With a detailed masterplan for the modernisation still some distance away, improving operations in the existing facilities at the Delhi airport would be on top of the agenda for experts from Fraport. ‘‘Our immediate task would be to study how the airport operates and what can be done on an ad hoc basis to improve it’s functioning,’’ said Ansgar Sickert, Fraport’s senior manager (Sales).

Areas like passenger flows and security set-up are going to be the main subject areas for these experts. ‘‘All kinds of bottlenecks which eventually lead to delays at the airport would be studied and we would try to come up with some short-term solutions,’’ Sickert added.

Fraport’s involvement in the refurbishing of Delhi airport is being viewed with much anticipation since it is credited with owning and managing Frankfurt airport, one of the Germany’s busiest airports and an important hub airport in global aviation system.
