Karnataka convener of Bajrang Dal Mahendra Kumar was on Friday night arrested by the police in connection with the spate of attacks on churches and prayer halls in parts of the state.

"Mahendra Kumar has been arrested tonight," Western Range Deputy Inspector General of Police A M Prasad said.

Soon after the attacks on churches on September 15 in parts of Mangalore and Udupi in coastal regions and in Chikamaglur in Malnad area, Bajrang Dal owned responsibility for them, claiming that incidents of forced conversion had prompted them.

With attacks on churches continuing unabated, the Centre on Friday issued a strong advisory asking the BJP government in the southern state to take immediate effective steps to check the violence, which it said was a "breach" of the Constitution.

In the advisory to Karnataka, the second in 24 hours, the Union Home Ministry brought to the notice of Karnataka government that elements behind such incidents continue to roam freely.

The advisory was, however, not sent under the emergency provisions of the Constitution (Article 355).

On its part, the Karnataka government described the advisory, the second to be issued, as "hasty and unwarranted".

"It is a hasty step. The Centre should have waited for some more time. Our government has already brought the situation under control. There are no casualties in the attack on churches in the state," Karnataka Home Minister V S Acharya said.

Avoiding conflictsBy: babu | 20-Sep-2008 Reply | Forward its high time india that all religious institutions should be checked and balanced bygovt whether its majority or minority. No religious affilated parties or persons should beallowed for elections and no forms of pictures or languages should be allowed inelections. Funded from outside these free acceptance should be stopped andtolerance should be teached in school. All religious school/insitutions should beput under govt control.
Religious intoleranceBy: babu | 20-Sep-2008 Reply | Forward Religious conflicts arises since Most Religious Preachers ignore the reality on grounds. My obervation of India for last 20 years finds that Mosques
Sheep stealing’By: secular | 20-Sep-2008 Reply | Forward The New Life and equivalent groups have done intensive ‘sheep stealing.’ Their whole congregation is made up of people from organised churches. There are many Christians who have also voluntarily embraced Hinduism. The Iskon organisation is an example to this. We have no quarrel with them as we consider faith or religion a matter between an individual and his Maker. The government should clearly define both ‘force’ and ‘inducement’ and book anyone or any organisation who uses either for conversion. The joke is now Bishop does not want forced ‘re-conversion’ after they forcibly converted poor illiterate tribals to Christianity and he knows Sonia Govt will prevent re-conversion and on the contrary encourage further conversions to Christianity
Milking communal riots for political advantageBy: Hindu | 20-Sep-2008 Reply | Forward Communal riots are common in any democratic set up. We have witnessed these types of communal clashes in Karnataka in the past also. But what is interesting to note is that the opposition parties always get some political mileage from the problem, instead In 1992 when S Bangarappa, the then Congress Chief Minister was ruling the state, there was an outburst of communal clashes between Hindus and Muslims, resulting in loss of lives and property. At that time, the Janata Dal, headed by H D Deve Gowda, using the issue was able to snatch the reinsAfter the alleged attack on churches at Mangalore, the CM has strongly condemned the incident and directed the police to register appropriate cases against those who are involved in the crime. As a head of the state the CM has done his duty. Now Mallikarjuna Kharge and Deve Gowda are visiting the damaged churches, addressing Christians with an intent to woo the minority community, keeping an eye on byelections
arrest of bajrang dal convenorBy: Vikramjit Banerjee | 20-Sep-2008 Reply | Forward Ban all political parties advocating secular ideologies . declare india a hindu state and be done with it . accept that the majority should have certain privilges in matters of religion . accept that minorities should be allowed to live in peace , as long as they have the goodwill of the majority . if the state continues to promote a system of religious apartheid , whereby the minority religions being less than 20 % of indian population control all the levers of power , you are bound to have outbursts like this . and such outbursts are legitimate . however they should preferably be nonviolent and gandhian . i urge all hindus to go in large numbers and conduct peaceful satygrahas outside their local churches and mosques and try to peacefully convince their misguided brothers to join the hindu fold . they should further stop paying taxes and refuse to do any work of the government , till the government accepts their demands . they must be willing to go to jail for their belief .
