Karan Johar's high-school drama with newcomers, Student of the Year, may not have appealed to everyone, but it has proved to be a successful launchpad for its cast. With Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra bagging big-ticket roles outside his banner, the filmmaker-producer seems to have found in the film a franchisee opportunity for his company, Dharma productions. Johar recently tweeted saying, "For all those asking, I'm definitely planning SOTY 2. Dharma plans to make it a franchise and launch new talent with it each time."

False Note

The first edition of MTV's India version of Video Music Awards (VMA) may after all be dominated by Bollywood. The VMAs, which started as an alternative to the Grammies to reward music videos and have a record of many a famous on-stage histrionics by legendary musicians such as Michael Jackson, Axl Rose and Madonna, seem to have meekly localised its content, which are lopsided with Bollywood music categories. With the channel reducing its Bollywood content, focusing more on experimental, independent musical shows such as Sound Trippin, Roots, Unplugged and Coke Studio in recent years, the VMAs may just seem conflicting to the channel's new approach.
