Filmmaker Mani Kaul, who passed away at his residence in New Delhi on Wednesday,is remembered by his friends in the city as somebody who was witty and full of intelligent humour, quite contrary to the themes of his films.

Prof Suresh Chabbria, who was in-charge of the Film Appreciation course at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII),and had been closely associated with Kaul since his student days at the institute, said,“There was something unusual about his style of making films that did not endear him to a lot of people. But he had an eye for details that reflected in his films, which had a distinct influence of the (Ritwik) Ghatak style of filmmaking.”

Kaul is survived by two sons and two daughters. From a Kashmiri family,Kaul’s love for food was something that had even transcended to cooking. “Whenever he would come to Pune he would make it a point to shop for the best spices and meats and then cook it himself for family and friends,” said Chhabria.

And while his contribution to the parallel cinema genre of the 1970s remains unquestioned,a lot of people remember him for his dramatic style of narrating stories.

Kaul was also an accomplished dhrupad singer. Dhrupad singer Uday Bhawalkar who was closely associated with the filmmaker said,“He could speak for hours on music, fine arts, paintings and virtually everything under the sun. For him art,be it any form, meant an extension of the person pursuing it. That was he.”

Kaul began his career with Uski Roti in 1969 which won critical acclaim. He went on to make award-winning films like Ashad Ka Ek Din,Duvidha and Idiot and documentary film Siddheshwari in 1989 which fetched him the National Film Award. Chabbria maintained that beyond tributes and memories,a lot needs to be done to preserve his films. “He made a lot of films for the Films Division and documentaries which have lot of value for serious cinema viewers. His works should be preserved and acquired so that they can continue to inspire future generations as he did us.”
