Left nursing its wounds following a series of electoral reverses, the ruling Left Front has left it on its district units to devise a strategy for the bypolls to 10 Assembly constituencies due on November 10.
After a meeting held today at the state CPM headquarters at Alimuddin Street, Left Front sources said their leaders failed to formalise a common strategy for the upcoming bypolls, leaving the job to district leaders. “District Left Front is responsible for deciding the campaign and strategy,” said Left Front chairman Biman Bose.
Sources said top Left Front leaders fear yet another debacle. “A primary survey conducted by the grass-roots level committees revealed a pathetic picture. In the face of contest against candidates of Congress-Trinamool combine, Left candidates may lose even the three seats currently held by us,” said a senior LF leader. Among the 10 seats going to polls, the Opposition currently holds seven.
Downbeat on its prospects, the CPM has decided not to send any top leader for election campaign. Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and state secretary Biman Bose are said to have refused campaigning for bypolls.
