From Jan, no more parking woes at New Delhi railway station

More space for All Northern Railway will increase parking space and put in an automated lane management system in an effort to ease traffic congestion and chaos in the area.

Come January, and those reaching New Delhi railway station will not have to face an harrowing time finding space to park.

The Delhi Division of the Northern Railway has chalked out a plan to revamp the parking area on the Ajmeri Gate side of the station.

The elaborate plan not only aims to provide better parking facilities to commuters but also ease congestion on the road leading to the railway station.

An official said designated lane management system will be implemented in the state-of-the-art parking facility to come up at the Ajmeri Gate-end.

The lanes outside platform 16 of will be segregated for private vehicles, autorickshaws and radio taxis, the official said.

"The first three lanes will be reserved for autos and taxis. And the outermost lane will be only for vehicles coming to drop commuters. Prepaid vehicle counters have also been redeveloped and will be placed at the end of the separate lanes," he said.

"Witnessing the congestion at the Ajmeri Gate-end, a need for modification in the layout plan was felt. The revamp work has started and the new arrangement is expected to be completed in three months," A K Sachan, Divisional Railway Manager, said.

According to the revamp plan, there will be separate entry and exit points for the premium and general car park areas. The entry and exit points will have automated barriers. Additional baggage scanners would also be installed outside the premium car parks and on the way to the platform. Officials said the entry and exit lanes on the Ajmeri Gate side have also been widened to ease traffic congestion.
