One of the bombs was defective; the rest were planted in Delhi’s markets on September 13. The Delhi Police Special Cell took Saif to Udupi on Monday.
Saif and Shahdab reached Udupi on August 28 night by the Nizamuddin-Eranakulam Mangala Express. They travelled AC three-tier, one of them in the name of Rahul Sharma. At 2.30 am, they checked into room No 207 of New Broadway hotel, costing Rs 250/night .
Atif Amin, who was killed in the encounter, had given them the mobile number of a contact who would deliver the bombs. They knew him as ‘Bhai.’
They called Bhai at 9 am from a PCO near the hotel. Bhai told them to call again, after he had finalised the location for handing over the bombs. The duo then roamed around Manipal University and visited the local museum.
They called Bhai at noon from a PCO at Manipal’s main bus stand. Bhai asked them to call again around 5 p m. They made this call from a PCO close to Royal Lodge. This time, Bhai told them they would meet at the railway station.
Saif and Shadab checked out of the hotel at 7.30 pm. They met Bhai at the Udupi railway station just minutes before the Mangala Express was to leave for Delhi. Bhai handed over 10 bombs in a grey travel bag. The bag was recovered from L-18, Jamia Nagar.
