Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi has warned to 8220;burn all of Libya8221; if the citizens do not cease protests against him.
In a surprise televised appearance,Gaddafi warned he was ready to unleash further bloodshed and urged his followers: 8220;Prepare to defend Libya,8221; Sky News reports.
8220;We will defeat any outside attempt to overturn our country, he told loyalists gathered in Tripoli8217;s Green Square,and adding that 8220;Libyan people love me.8221;
In his fourth bizarre public tirade this week,Col Gaddafi told supporters to 8220;keep dancing,keep chanting8221;,adding: 8220;Libyan people love me.8221;
Later,his son Saif al-Islam Gaddafi claimed security forces were holding back in battles with rebels 8211; who referred to as 8220;terrorists8221; 8211; in western Libya and that he hoped there would be a ceasefire in place by Saturday.
The warnings have come days after the massive anti-government protests in Tripoli,which have left hundreds of people dead.
The US has shut down its embassy in Tripoli and the White House said it would be introducing sanctions against Libya 8220;in the near future8221;.
A spokesman said it was made 8220;in concert with international partners8221;.
Obama said in a statement that: 8220;The Libyan government8217;s continued violation of human rights,brutalization of its people,and outrageous threats have rightly drawn the strong and broad condemnation of the international community.8221;
Meanwhile,Britain has warned senior Libyan regime officials to stop supporting Colonel Gaddafi or face trial along with the autocratic ruler for crimes against humanity.
India and 14 other members of the UN Security Council have agreed to hold yet another meeting of the powerful body to consider sanctions against the Gaddafi regime in Libya to end the brutal crackdown by forces loyal to him against anti-government protesters.
UN chief Ban Ki-moon has asked the UNSC to take 8220;concrete action8221; against Muammar Gaddafi8217;s regime in Libya to stop his forces8217; bloody crackdown against anti-government protesters,warning that any delay would add to the death toll which has already crossed 1,000.
