  • Libya may be on the rapproachment path with the US and the rest of the Western world but when it came to choosing her honeymoon destination, Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi’s newly wed daughter Aisha chose to come to India for two weeks last month.

One of the most active among Gaddafi’s eight children, Aisha is a law graduate who is also among the battery of lawyers defending Saddam Hussein. She got married in April to a military official in one of the special units of the Libyan Army.

It’s learnt that Aisha and her husband were here for a fortnight starting May 15 and spent their time between Delhi and Agra. It was a quiet trip that was kept strictly under wraps and so little was let out about their engagements.

Besides Seif el-Islam—Gaddafi’s second-eldest son who is widely believed to be the possible successor—Aisha is among the most popular faces from the family.

She was recently involved in promoting a Lionel Richie concert in Tripoli to mark the 20th anniversary of the American bombings in Libya, held probably a week or so before her wedding.

The bombings, ordered by former US President Ronald Regan, had hit Gaddafi’s house killing his adopted daughter Hanna. “Twenty years ago on this day, I awoke to the sound of bombs and rockets and the cries of my brothers ... But today we try to heal our wounds and shake hands with those who are here with us tonight. Yes for peace, no for destruction,’’ Aisha had said at the concert which was held outside the house that has still been kept in the same wrecked state.

    ... contd.
