Gadkari snubs Sushma: CVC issue alive, will go to people

PM Statement: Sushma wanted end to attacks; Gadkari says,‘I am party chief’.

BJP president Nitin Gadkari today said the party would continue to target Prime Minister Manmohan Singh over the appointment of P J Thomas as CVC,a direct snub for Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj, who has been saying that with the PM owning responsibility, the issue should be considered closed.

Days after Swaraj appreciated Singh’s statement and sought to “let matters rest”,Gadkari made it clear that the BJP was not yet satisfied.

“The CVC issue is not over. We are not satisfied… We will take the issue to the people’s court now. We will take the Prime Minister’s reply to the people,” Gadkari said. Asked whether this was the party line,he said: “I am the president of the party and I am saying this.”

Gadkari, however, insisted that there were no differences between Swaraj and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley over the issue.

Gadkari announced plans to launch a campaign against the UPA government over corruption, price rise and black money. He said the CVC issue would be part of the campaign.

The bickering — many in the BJP feel it is a reflection of a power struggle at the top — was visible in Parliament. In Lok Sabha, the BJP accepted Singh’s statement, but Jaitley asked several questions in Rajya Sabha, and later expressed his dissatisfaction.

Gadkari said the PM had blamed the then MoS in the PMO,who in turn had suggested that the Kerala government was responsible for not red-flagging Thomas.

He suggested that “outside forces” had a role in the appointment. “There was some political influence… influence by some outside forces,” Gadkari said.

“The UPA government has lost credibility because of the way it is functioning, the Prime Minister has lost trust,” he alleged.
