Gallery of war criminals

  • The UN court has indicted 161 people for war crimes in former Yugoslavia in the 1990s. Fifty-six people have been found guilty and sentenced, 10 have been acquitted, and 36 cases were dropped or the accused died. Aside from the fugitives, the rest are in various stages of trial, in The Hague or in their countries.

    Slobodan Milosevic: The former Yugoslav president was called “Butcher of the Balkans” and was accused of starting the four wars. But his supporters say he did “everything in his power to avert war ”. He was charged with crimes against humanity, grave breaches of the Geneva Conventions and genocide. The trial ended without a verdict as he died during the proceedings.

    Stojan Zupljanin: The wartime Bosnian Serb security chief was arrested in June, 2008. Zupljanin, charged with crimes against Muslims and Croats, was indicted on 12 counts, including crime against humanity.

    Ratko Mladic: The Chief of Staff, Army of the Republika Srpska (VRS), the Bosnian Serb Army was indicted on genocide charges and crimes against humanity for siege of Sarajevo and Srebrenica massacre. There is currently an outstanding arrest warrant against Mladiæ.

    Goran Hadzic: A politician, is a suspected war criminal and currently at large. He faces 14 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity for his alleged involvement in forcible removal and murder of Croatian civilians from the Republic of Croatia between 1991 and 1993.

    Momir Nikolic: The Assistant Chief of Security and Intelligence, VRS, when the unit was engaged in operations resulting in Srebrenica Genocide. Nikolic was found guilty of engaging in genocide, and also charged with Violations of Laws or Customs of War. He was sentenced to 27 years’ imprisonment in 2003 which was later reduced to 20 years.
