Gautam Gambhir and Sachin Tendulkar hit opportune centuries as India came up with a spirited batting display to salvage a draw in the first cricket Test against Sri Lanka in Ahmedabad on Friday.

Opener Gautam Gambhir conjured up yet another marathon innings of 114 runs, result of his six-and-half hour vigil, before Sachin Tendulkar (100 not out) took the centrestage to chase down yet another milestone of 30,000 international runs en route to his 43rd Test ton.

With VVS Laxman (51 not out) also chipping in with his 40th Test half-century, India batted their way out of trouble to maintain their impressive home record against the Lankans.

Going into the final day's play needing just eight wickets to snap their 14-match winless streak on Indian soil, the exasperated Sri Lankans could only watch haplessly as the hosts showed the kind of application and determination that had been missing in their shoddy first innings display.

Resuming with 144 runs in the arrear, the Indians finished the day at 412 for four with Gambhir, Tendulkar and Laxman scoring bulk of the runs on a shirtfront of a wicket that simply had nothing for the bowlers.

Both the teams now move to Kanpur for the second Test starting on November 24. Milestone man Tendulkar reached yet another landmark in his glittering career when he turned swing bowler Chanaka Welegedara backward of square for a single to take his tally of runs in Tests, ODIs and T20 internationals to 30,000.

Overall, it was a poor advertisement for Test cricket as nearly 1600 runs were scored while just 21 wickets fell over the five days' play leading to this stalemate.

    ... contd.

Need more consistencyBy: Khilesh | 20-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Well done the batsman. But wish they play first innings better. Anyway, saving a test is as important as winning it and that is the fun of test cricket. Sachin, after he was critized a few years ago for not being a chaser in one dayers and a fourth innings batsman in tests, has remarkably improved on this front. 175 in the one day series against Australia, excellent one day 110 in Australia earlier last year and this century to name just a few....he can really prove his critics wrong...i wish some cricket writer will give his test and one day average playing last during last two years. We are lucky to have the master.
SachinBy: Surjeet | 20-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward God Bless Sachin, you are not only a genius but also a perfect gentleman. May you now score 100 centuries...play on and you will.
SURELYBy: abdulrawoofashfaq | 21-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Mr. Surjeet, we wish Allah will accept your blessings to Sachin and Insha Allah sachin will score more centuries which nobody will break his record.
Dhoni's men fight backBy: satishbablani | 20-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Driven to wall, the Indian players namely Laxman, sehwag, tendulkar, gambhir did an excellent job of holding the wicket and scoring the runs to demonstrate that they are as good as any one while playing in India. normally wins bring the joy, but here the draw brought a joy despite fears of losing the match........ and dashed the hope of Sri Lankan of winning We say well done ....... and congratulte the Indian Team on the their display of the match. But then they have to learn improve specially Sehwag... if he is not cut out for Test..then he should be dropped and rested ... reckless play in Test Cricket is not to be tolerated .... it is suicide and one should pay price for the same ....
Batman with big heartBy: Jatinder S Hoon | 20-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward If only Indian politicians can follow Sachin success on the pitch and hit bad balls for four and sixes, India can become super power, not only in cricket but also economically. What India now need is a great leader who can lead and bat for India masses. "HAIL THE CHIEF."Sachin Tendulkar sure carry a, "Big bat and speak softly and let the bat do its talking".
