More than 30,000 tehbazari kiosks in the city will get a new look as part of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s plans to beautify the Capital for next year’s Commonwealth Games. These kiosks will be developed, officials said, to ensure ‘zero encroachment’ on public land — a common feature at present.
As per plans, the uniformly designed kiosks will generate advertisement revenue for MCD. The compact kiosks, to be modelled after the city’s heritage structures, will be constructed under a public-private partnership structure.
“These kiosks will be built by a private company, with advertisement rights for 10 years. After that, the rights will be handed over to the civic body,” MCD Standing Committee chairman Vijender Gupta said.
The company will also maintain public utilities, telephone booths and dustbins in the vicinity of these kiosks.
The kiosks will have two advertising spaces and bulbs powered by solar light. As per plans, once MCD gets the advertisement rights, it will share revenue with the kiosk owner.
The MCD will set up a committee to monitor the functioning of these kiosks and the operation of the private company, officials said.
“The committee will ensure that the kiosks maintain basic hygiene. Cooking and washing utensils will not be allowed in or around the kiosk,” MCD Commissioner K S Mehra said. “Also, these kiosks will be liable to pay all municipal and other taxes.”
