Gang-bust: Kingpin trained kids

Arrested from naka in Sector 23, remanded in judicial custody; two children sent to juvenile home

The UT Police has busted a gang and arrested its three members, including the kingpin, involved in stealing electronic devices in the market area of Sector 22.

Roshan Kumar, 19, a resident of West Bengal, was arrested from a naka in Sector 23 on Sunday. He allegedly trained youngsters to steal mobile phones, laptops and other electronic devices.

A local court remanded him in judicial custody on Monday.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (Central) Ashish Kapoor said, "The 19-year-old used to send the stolen items to Kolkata. He had trained some children aged 12 who used to steal the electronic devices from Sector 22 market area. Two such children were arrested."

A police officer told Chandigarh Newsline that hours before Roshan was arrested, he had sent a gunny bag full of mobile phones to Kolkata. "We had arrested two children aged 12 on December 21. They were caught stealing mobile phones from sector 22. When interrogated, they revealed that they used to work for Roshan and another person," said Sub-Inspector Ram Rattan, in-charge, Police Post, Sector 22. The arrested two children were sent to a juvenile home.

The police were on the lookout for Roshan and caught him at a naka in Sector 23 where he was riding a Kinetic, a stolen vehicle bearing a fake registration number, according to police officers.

After his arrest, when the police raided his rented room at Ramdarbar, Phase II, 25 mobile phones of various models, a laptop, a video recording camera and a wrist watch were recovered. "The total seizure is worth nearly Rs 2.5 lakh," said the DSP.

"He used to go to West Bengal and bring along children who were trained to steal mobile phones and other electronic items. After a tip-off was received that there was a group of children who were stealing mobile phones from Sector 22, police arrested the two minors," said SI Ram Rattan.
