Gangrape victims accuse police of shielding accused

Two Dalit sisters, who were allegedly gangraped on October 31 in Nakodar, have now claimed that the police are shielding the culprits.

Two Dalit sisters, who were allegedly gangraped on October 31 in Nakodar, have now claimed that the police are shielding the culprits. One of the girls,a student of Class XI and an athlete, and her brother,a student of the same class, have stopped going to school after the incident.

“We feel ashamed and can’t face our classmates and teachers as this incident has changed our lives totally,” said the 17-year-old victim, adding that our parents wanted to educate us but now we cannot go to school. Our future is dark now and life is a burden, said the girl.

The girls had alleged in the police complaint that five persons including an NRI,Jasbir Singh in his 50s,had gangraped them at his house in Nakodar. The girls were their domestic help.

While the accused were booked on October 31 for the offence, the victims alleged that police arrested only Jasbir’s driver Charanjit Singh and his friend Gurcharan Singh while Jasbir was moving freely. The other two absconding accused are Jasbir’s friend Manga and an identified person.

The girls alleged that after they lodged the complaint the police had called Jasbir to police station but released him after registering a case. “Now Jasbir is threatening and pressurising us for a compromise,” said the elder sister.

They demanded that police should arrest Jasbir, his wife Kamaljit Kaur and other accused, alleging that Kamaljit,in her late 30s,knew about the incident but threatened them of dire consequences.

The mother of the victims said they had met Jalandhar SSP RK Jaiswal and pleaded for justice. The Nakodar police were shielding the culprits, she alleged. Jaiswal has asked DSP Nakodar Rajinder Singh to take immediate action.

Rajinder said according to the preliminary inquiry conducted by Nakodar police, the involvement of the NRI was not proven in the incident. “I received the application from the SSP office yesterday only and will begin an inquiry tomorrow,” he added.
