GEEK GOD

This is what dreams are made of,” says Kunal Nayyar,“coming from Delhi and now being invited to walk the red carpet at the Emmys.” Nayyar plays the character of Rajesh Koothrappali in Big Bang Theory, one of the most popular TV shows in the US. He has now been invited to attend the Emmys,America’s most prestigious TV awards.

The actor hails from New Delhi and went to study in the US when he was 18. He had gone to pursue a Bachelor in Business Studies and, just for fun, decided to act in a college play. “I was horrible in the play. I realised that I’m such a bad actor and I must improve so I decided to take acting classes,” he laughs. After graduating,he grew to love acting so much that he then went on to do a Masters in Performing Arts. Then he managed to do some commercials and also moved to London for a while to act in plays.

“Everyone warned me about trying to make a career in acting abroad. But that’s what made me think about how cool it would be if I could make it. I worked really hard and then got selected during the auditions of Big Bang Theory,” adds the 28-year-old.

The hilarious comedy, based on four geeks who try very hard to understand normal social behaviour is now a big hit even in India. Everybody loves the innocent Indian particle astrophysics scientist who cannot talk to girls when sober. We ask him if he’s anything like that in real life. “You know right now it’s six in the morning. I woke up 15 minutes ago and downed a bottle of Jack Daniels,” he jokes. “But seriously,it’s funny how everyone expects me to be like that in reality. I’ve gone to the mall and girls have come up to me to talk and when I reply they get so shocked that I actually replied to a girl,” he laughs.

Indians always complain about being typecast in shows and movies abroad and we ask the actor if he’s ever been asked to ‘do that Indian accent and nod.’ “The accent I use on the show is a normal Indian accent. I’ve never been asked to modify that. And I really don’t care much about being typecast. I really don’t expect to play an American hero. You also wouldn’t be able to accept Tom Cruise to play hero in a complete Indian film. I definitely have limitations but I don’t get caught up in this debate,” he says diplomatically.

The show will now begin its third season on September 21 and what can expect from Nayyar in this season? “Well all the boys are so happy in their space and set way of life that there is not much to play with the characters. But Raj will definitely be working more on his social skills. There will also be some scare of deportation and the rest of the guys will help him through it,” he reveals.
