  • The Jammu and Kashmir government on Wednesday released Hurriyat hardliner Syed Ali Shah Geelani. The 77-year-old separatist leader had been detained under the Public Safety Act (PSA) after he called for protests against the Shopian double rape and murder case. Senior Superintendent of Police, Srinagar, Javed Riyaz, said: “He has been released in the evening”.

The state government is also mulling to let Geelani visit Pakistan for the first time to meet his ailing son there. The government has decided to grant passport to the separatist leader.

Geelani was arrested on June 6 after he called for protests against the Shopian rape and murder. The state government first put him under house arrest and cut his communication lines. However, as this didn’t stop Geelani from reaching out to people and calling for shutdowns, the government decided to arrest him.
