You wouldnt think martial arts had anything to do with Madhav Charis latest album, would you? Well,it does: Chari,Indias renowned jazz musician says that martial arts have helped him develop what he calls the extended body-mind. Whatever you hear on the album is the accumulated practice over two years and a result of Trinetra,my collaboration with martial artist George Kurien. It is the journey of jazz music and martial arts, says the Chennai-based jazz musician who has performed with legends such as Wynton Marsalis,Lester Bowie,Bryan Lynch among others.
Chari was born in Kolkata where he began his piano explorations when he was five years old. But academics took over after he was offered a full scholarship to Dartmouth College in 1986. Later he enrolled in the Mathematics PhD program at the University of Illinois. But music won over the math as Chari became the sole Indian jazz musician in New Yorks illustrated jazz circles.
Parisian Thoroughfares (EMI,Rs 295) is Charis latest offering of nine tunes, four of which are his interpretations of popular jazz standards; the rest are his original compositions. The album was supposed to be released last year but there were some last minute copyright issues that had to be taken care of. We recorded in Paris and Ive collaborated with two French jazz musicians,Mourad Benhammou on drums and Fabien Marcoz on bass , says Chari. So where does martial arts fit in? Chari was conducting music workshops for corporates and he met Kurien who was doing the same with martial arts. Kurien initiated the project and soon Trinetra: Jazz meets Martial Arts was born. There have been a lot of interesting changes in the way I look at jazz now. I want to get rid of the stereotypes that jazz is meant for intellectuals, that it is meant to be played only in hotels and bars, that you cant dance to it, says Chari who will soon be bringing more jazz musicians from America to perform across India early next year. But for now, head to the Park this weekend and step up to dance.
