Barkha Bisht who shakes a leg to Ishq barse in Raajneeti is the latest television actress to jump on to the bandwagon of “item” numbers

What prompted you to do the “item” number Ishq barse boondan boondan in Raajneeti?
Firstly, though it is an “item” number, let me clarify that it is an integral part of the film. I have no issues with it being called an “item” number but I’d like to reinstate the fact that it is very situational, which is why I got all the more kicked about the entire idea. Besides Prakash Jha had told me,when we met, that he wanted a face which looked modern yet homely and Indian and I fit the bill perfectly. Who would not want to be a part of such big a film with great actors and a director with a calibre of Mr Jha?

Didn’t you have any apprehensions doing it?
No,it’s not sleazy. It’s been shot very aesthetically and the moves are not vulgar. I know I can watch this song with my family at home so why would I have apprehensions. It’s my work and I know where I would draw the line if anything apprehensive was to come up.

Also, once you do a dance number you get stuck with that image?
I doubt that because I have been doing a lot of stage shows and performances that has not stopped me from being cast for good roles on television or otherwise. I think if you’re honest with your job it comes across and the versatility counts. I am not saying I am spendid but I know whatever I do,I do it with a lot of honesty not with the fear that I may get typecast.

How was it interacting with Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif?
They were very sweet. Ranbir thought I was a great dancer and kept telling me so. Katrina has no airs about her. It’s been great working with them.

Wouldn’t it have been better to make a film debut with a role?
I would love to do fims but I would not jump into it for the heck of it. If anything substantial comes my way,I will definitely do it but I’m not the sort who would want to run away from television because a film has come my way. I am happy with what I am doing. After all, television has given me all the recognition and at the moment I’m enjoying it.

You are most remembered for your serial Pyaar De Do Naam Ek Radha Ek Shyam. What are your memories of it?
I met my hubby, whom I fondly call Neil, while shooting for this serial (smiles). I have fond memories as I met my life partner who is also my best friend. Plus I gained a lot of recognition for the show. I loved the team,it was fun working with them.

How interesting is your role in Sajan Ghar Jaana Hai?
I am playing the character of Dhani right now in Sajan Ghar Jaana Hai. It’s been interesting because I have done a lot of stunts like hanging from trees and jumping from heights. I even got bruised all over, but it was fun because I have never done this before. I started playing a bahu then went onto playing a daaku and now I’m back in the bahu avatar. We just completed 200 episodes. I’m glad people are liking it. My in-laws especially are happy with my current avatar where I am dressed as a Bengali bahu.
I am concentrating on this serial right now as it’s a daily. I don’t have the time to take on anything else.

Do you identify with any of the characters that you have played?

All of them have streaks of me but nothing has been a splitting image of my personality. In Sajan… I’m an obedient bahu. Though I am not exactly like that in real life, home will always be a priority. In Pyaar… I had played a coy girl most of the times. Actually,I am an extrovert, but when it comes to my man,I do get shy.
