With Camouflaged,Surily Goel gets a piece of the IPL action

Surily Goel might not have been a prominent face on the fashion circuit lately but the designer seems to have made up for it with her IPL collection called Camouflaged, specifically designed for the IPL Kings XI Punjab team.

“The IPL is the talk of the town these days and I’d be a fool not to get a piece of the action,” says Goel who launched the collection at Ensemble,Bandra recently. She also claims to be a huge IPL fan. “I’ve been watching all the matches closely. Kings XI Punjab and Kolkata Knight Riders are my absolute favourites.”

With the collection she seems to have left familiar territories of glitz and glamour and moved into terra incognita. “I’ve done a lot of experimentation this time.” So while her spring/summer collection is full of pastel shades and flowing silhouettes,Camouflaged has sharper cuts, androgynous looks with georgette and lace to give it a feminine touch. There’s also a lot of layering with corsets on top of dresses, bubble dresses paired with lace slips or loose kaftan tops teamed with military skirts. “In every piece there’s a juxtaposition of something grand with something street,” says Goel.

While some designers might be content to make their universes revolve around the orbit of fashion,Goel isn’t one of them. “I get bored very easily,” she says. So she began the year with the Chivas Fashion Tour travelling to Delhi,Bangalore and Mumbai. She’s also been working on some advertisements like the Catch Masala ad with Juhi Chawla and the Fanta ad with Genelia D’Souza.

And no protégé of Manish Malhotra is allowed to give her mentor’s bastion,Bollywood,a miss. Besides having styled for Chance Pe Dance which released in January this year,Goel also styled costumes for the Preity Zinta-starrer Har Pal and It’s My Life. “I’ve always loved styling Preity Zinta,” she says. “She has an amazing sense of style. She’s one of the few stars who can pick something from the street and make it look ultra glam.” For now,Goel is taking a break from Bollywood and enjoying the flavour of the season—IPL.
