  • The Ghaziabad Police is set to install CCTV cameras at 21 major intersections to improve surveillance. Also on the anvil are plan to modernise the police control room for better monitoring of traffic flow.

Speaking to Newsline, Ghaziabad SP Traffic, Anil Kumar, said installing a modern system would help the police wield better control over traffic.

“It will also help in ensuring that anti-social activities are kept in check,” Kumar said. The CCTVs will also capture images of those who jump red lights.

The installation of CCTV cameras is part of Uttar Pradesh government’s plan to create a hi-tech surveillance system in three major cities — Lucknow, Ghaziabad and Noida.

The cameras would be able to record activity till up to one kilometre and can turn 270 degrees. “It means that we will be able to keep a watch over every activity at an intersection by installing only two cameras,” said a senior police officer. There will be a separate control room equipped with modern gadgets to monitor the images from the cameras.

The proposal has been approved after a detailed study of the CCTV camera-based surveillance systems used in Delhi and other cities.

Kumar said work on the project will be started soon and the HCL engineers have already begun their preliminary inspections. “The HCL needs to submit a proposal citing the cost of the project. We hope to finalise it next month. After the installation of CCTV cameras, the police plan to keep a watch on these major intersections 24X7,” said Kumar.
