Slum dwellers clashed with the police as officials of the Ghaziabad Development Authority tried to clear encroachment from land owned by the agency.
The slums in Sector 6 of Vasundhara are spread across six acre of GDA land and A K Gupta,a GDA official, had gone to the slums around 1 pm.
The police said there was a fire in the slums, which the slum dwellers allege was started by GDA officials, and two women were injured. Meera and Saraswati were injured in the fire. The slum dwellers then started attacking the officials who had gone there for clearing the slums. We had to intervene in order to maintain law and order, Rahul Yadvendu,SP (City) Ghaziabad, said.
Even though fire tenders were dispatched to the spot, the fire spread to all 250 jhuggis in the area. All the jhuggis were gutted,as the fire spread very fast due to the heat and the materials the slums were made of. The slum dwellers attacked the GDA officials, police personnel and fire fighters too; six policemen and 18 slum dwellers were injured in the incident, Yadvendu said.
A case has been registered in the Indirapuram police station against 60 slum dwellers and some of them have been detained for the rioting.
