In a suspected case of honour killing,a couple was allegedly killed by the girls family in Rohtak district of Haryana on Wednesday evening. While the girl,Nidhi Barak,20,was reportedly killed in public view and cremated,the boy,Dharmender Barak,23,was reportedly beaten up,his arms and legs broken,and then beheaded. The youths body was then dumped outside his house in the village.
Both Nidhi and Dharmender belonged to the Jat community and were residents of Gharnavati village in Kalanaur,Rohtak district. Till late night,Dharmenders family had not lodged a formal police complaint.
According to the police,Nidhi was pursuing a fine arts course in Rohtak,while Dharmender was doing an ITI diploma course in Rohtak. Nidhis family had reportedly warned Dharmender a few times in the past.
On Tuesday morning,Nidhi and Dharmender reportedly left their homes and did not return. According to reports,they had decided to get married. Nidhis family contacted her on Wednesday morning and persuaded her to return home,reportedly with the assurance that they would not harm her or Dharmender.
Our preliminary information has revealed that when Dharmender and Nidhi returned to the village on Wednesday evening,they were taken to Nidhis home. They were both assaulted by her relatives. Nidhis family first lynched her and then cremated her. Then they broke Dharmenders arms and legs and beheaded him, said DSP Anil Kumar.
Nidhis father,Billu,has been arrested,while the rest of her family members are reported to be missing from the village.
We managed to recover Nidhis remains from her pyre. We have taken the boys body for a post-mortem examination, said the DSP.
