Girl set on fire by stalker dies

Hathras Victim's father accuse police of inaction; probe ordered.

The teenage girl, who was set on fire allegedly by a youth for resisting eve-teasing in Hathras district, succumbed to her burn injuries at a hospital in Aligarh on Saturday morning.

The accused, Arjun, who was arrested on January 1, a day after the incident, will now be charged with murder, said SP of Hathras Happy Guptan.

"The girl was being stalked and harassed by the accused for over five months. We had reportedly filed a complaint in this regard at Sasnigate police station in August, but the police did not register any case," the victims' father, who runs a tea stall, told The Sunday Express.

"Had the police initiated action against the accused four months ago, my daughter would have not been attacked," he added.

The victim's father said despite assurance from the district administration and police that the medical expenses will be borne by them, he did not receive any.

"I had to take a loan of Rs 50,000 two days ago against two-and-half bigha land to meet the medical expenses," he said. Police, meanwhile, denied having received any complaint from the victim's father against Arjun.

"We went through the documents at the Sasnigate police station but could not find any such complaint given by the girl or her father," Guptan said. She, however, added that police had "bound down" the girl's father and Arjun under CrPC section 107/116 for maintaining peace, four months ago. The reason behind the police action shown in the document was a dispute between the two over Rs 25,000, said Guptan.

As per the police documents, Guptan claimed, Arjun had given Rs 25,000 to Sharma through the girl for renovation of their house. Arjun and Sharma had entered in a brawl when the youth asked for his money. The matter went to the police and both the persons were bound down, added the SP.
