Investigations revealed that the girl is not from Gujjar community and did not live at Lado Sarai,as indicated in her form.

A case of cheating and criminal conspiracy has been registered.

The accused — Himanshu Gupta (26),Vikas (24) and Ketan Gupta (24) — used to provide fake caste and community certificates to students looking for admissions, police said.

“Most of these students are from top-notch schools and they paid anywhere between Rs 3 lakh and Rs 5 lakh for the fake certificates. The racket was being run in the guise of an educational consultancy firm,” said Ashok Chand,Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime).

Most of these forged certificates have been issued by the office of the Tehsildar in Mehrauli, where Ketan worked as a data entry operator in the certificates section, police said.

“Ketan would upload the data of forged certificates on the website of the office of the Tehsildar to ensure their authenticity,in case any inspections were done,” Chand said.

Police added that a number of students had already got admissions using such forged certificates.

“We have found documents of 12 students who have gained entry in colleges of their choice using fake SC and OBC certificates. These include a girl, with a score of 94.25 per cent, who used an OBC certificate to get admission in B Com (Hons) in Shri Ram College of Commerce,” Chand said.

J M Khurana,DU Dean of Students’ Welfare, said the University registered criminal cases against 81 students this March after their certificates were found fake.

“Our verification process begins only after admissions are over, and it goes on till February-end. Though we have a screening process during admissions,it is not possible to verify each certificate in the absence of a central database,” said Khurana.

University officials said they are waiting for the police to get in touch with them and will then cancel admissions as soon as relevant information is received.
