A girl’s body was found in a steel trunk dumped at Talera compound in Dattanagar area of Dighi on Friday.

The post-mortem revealed that the unidentified girl, who was around 20 years old, had been strangled. “We suspect that the girl was from Nepal or Bengal. She was five feet tall,” said police sub inspector Prabhakar Pawar of Vishrantwadi police station.

The steel trunk was found by Krishna Aamre, a watchman employed at Talera compound, while he was taking rounds of the compound.

Suspecting something amiss, he immediately contacted Anand Kadam, the manager at Talera compound. When Kadam arrived at the spot, he noticed the broken lock of the trunk. On opening the trunk, they saw some clothes and a newspaper lying on the semi-nude body. She had a red gown on, police said.

Police said Kadam contacted Vishrantwadi police station around 10.30 in the morning. A police team led by senior police inspector Anil Ghuge and police inspector Ram Jadhav soon arrived at the spot. They immediately sought the assistance of fingerprint experts and a dog squad.

The dog squad soon started circling a container that was parked in the compound. The police suspect that the body may have been brought in the container. “The age of the woman is between 20 and 22 years. We have not yet been able to identify her,” Pawar said.
