An unidentified man entered into a room in D-Block of Mata Nanki Girls' Hostel in the wee hours of Friday by scaling the boundary wall. He, however, managed to flee after a couple of girls spotted him and raised an alarm. The students, angered by the lack of concern by the university authorities for their security, protested at the main gate of the university and burnt an effigy of Vice-Chancellor Dr A S Brar.
Such incidents have been reported in the campus earlier as well, sources said. The girls alleged that despite complaining about the incident, no action was taken. " The man entered room number 236 of the hostel around 3.30 am. His face was covered with a cloth and he was standing close to our beds," said Bhavna, who stays in the hostel. He ran out of the room when we switched on the light, she added.
"Instead of taking action in the matter, the authorities are blaming the girls for the incident," said Gurnoor, another resident of the hostel.
"We do not feel safe in the hostel," said Manisha adding that most of the girls feel insecure. Male staff members of the maintenance department enter their rooms without seeking permission, she alleged.
The girls also charged the male staff in the hostel mess with making obscene gestures at them.
The girls demanded that the security of the hostel be beefed up and the staff members of the mess be provided residence elsewhere in the campus.
