As over a billion people in India remained glued to their television sets on Saturday,Puneites living in different parts of the world also made it a point to watch the thrilling World Cup final between India and Sri Lanka. Some stayed up the entire night, some took an off from work, others missed an exam while most organised a special screening of the match just to make sure they are a part of the action.

Siddharth Kulkarni,an electrical engineer living in Dubai, took a holiday from work. “We have offs only on Fridays, here in Dubai, but I had taken an off for the match. Of course, for trainee engineers that does mean loss of pay,but then it is the finals of the World Cup.”

Roshan Alexander,a student in London, managed to convince his professor to allow him to miss an internal exam so that he could watch the match. “The match is important for all of us here in London. It cannot get bigger than this. Everything else can wait,” he said.

A student of the Southwest Minnesota State University,Sameer Advani, organised an event where he and his friends woke up as early as 3 am to watch the match. “We set the alarms to get up early and cheered for the Indians,” he said.

Himanshu Sharma,a student of the University of Texas in Dallas, watched the match with his Indian friends in the university itself. “We contributed for a dish TV connection to watch the match live. Others also watched the match through live streaming on their laptops,” he said.

For the Puneites down under, the match goes on all the way up to 4 am. Amol Joshi,a financial analyst living in Melbourne watched the match in his house with 11 of his friends. “For the other matches we survived on Red Bull and coffee as we had work the next day. Luckily this game was on a Saturday,” said Joshi.

Ranjit Nandan, who is pursuing a course in aviation in Auckland,New Zealand, said staying up the entire night to watch the match is the least they can do for their country after they reached the finals. “I couldn’t miss it for anything in the world,” he said.
