The fixation of price for land under acquisition for two mega projects in Mohali was put off late on Thursday evening after local Congress MLA Balbir Sidhu strongly opposed the move.
The District Land Price Fixation Committee meeting was called at the Deputy Commissioner’s office on Thursday to fix the rates for around 18 acres of scattered land in Ballomajra, Daon, Saneta and Sukhgarh villages on the outskirts of Mohali.
While 10.28 acres were under acquisition in Ballomajra and Daon villages for a mega township project being developed by Taneja Developers and Infrastructure Limited, 0.8 acre and 6.6 acres in Saneta and Sukhgarh villages, respectively, were under acquisition for the mega township project of PACL India Limited.
The acquisition is being carried out by Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA).
Taking up cudgels for the landowners, Sidhu objected the move saying: “If mega developers require the land they should deal directly with the landowners rather than going through a government agency.”
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Prabhjot Singh Mand, who is the chairman of the committee, said the meeting was postponed on the request of the MLA, who sought more time to study the agenda.
“Agendas of such meets are not sent in advance but instead given on the spot,” clarified Mand, while refuting any procedural lapse in the meeting.
