GMCH-32 penalises chemists for selling recycled surgical device

Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, penalised a chemist running his shop on the hospital premises for allegedly selling a recycled and non-functional surgical device. The action was taken following a complaint filed with the director principal of the hospital by a patient's relative stating that the chemist had allegedly sold a recycled stitch remover.

The hospital has imposed a penalty of Rs 2,000 on the chemist. Harvinder Singh, a resident of Baka village, Kaithal district, lodged complaint with Dr Raj Bahadur regarding purchase of stitch remover from the Central Drug Stores of GMCH-32.

Hospital authorities said that it was found that the product, originally of Johnson & Johnson, was allegedly recycled by the chemist. It was wrapped in a plain envelop and it was non functional.

The chemist had sold the stitch remover for Rs 750 without issuing a bill. When the doctor asked the patient to return it to the chemist, as it was not working and was recycled, the chemist initially refused to take it back, but later deducted Rs 250 on the pretext that it had now been handled, hospital authorities added. The complaint has been forwarded to the police to take action against the chemist.
