GMSSS, Jalandhar triumphs

    Buoyed by a fine-tuned performance by their forwards, Government Model Senior Secondary School, Jalandhar scored a 2-0 win over Bright Scholar Senior Secondary School, Sonepat in a third phase of the 38th ATS Junior Nehru Hockey Tournament being played at Sports Complex, Sector 42 on Thursday. The Jalandhar team was into attacking mode right from the start of the match as they earned a penalty corner in the 15th minute of the match but failed to covert the penalty corner. They soon earned another penalty corner in the 20th minute before scoring the opening goal through Satbir Singh in the 27th minute. The Jalandhar team kept on attacking and earned two penalty corners in the next five minutes before starting the second half on a dominating note. Their forwards made some fine sallies into the opposition half and kept the Sonepat team under pressure all the time in the second half. Their efforts soon proved futile when Akash Deep Singh scored the second goal for the Jalandhar team in the 57th minute to hand the Jalandhar team a 2-0 win.

    In another match of the day, Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 42, Chandigarh played a 1-1 draw with Army Boys Sports Coy BRC, Danapur. Both the teams started on an aggressive note but it was the Danapur team who drew first blood. Niyaran Mundu scored the opening goal of the match for the Danapur team in the second minute when he converted a penalty corner to put Danapur team into lead. Government Model Senior Secondary School, Chandigarh forwards then regrouped their energies and made some brilliant moves to earn three penalty corners in the first half. But the equaliser came in the form of Gagandeep Singh when he scored a goal in the 49th minute.
