GNIMT collects fines from students against PTU rules

Going against the norms of Punjab Technical University, city-based Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology has started collecting fines from college students for missing lectures. Reportedly, the fine being collected is Rs 10 per lecture.

As per rules of PTU, a college cannot impose fines on students for missing lectures and can only 'strike their name off if student remains absent for 10 or more days".

A student of MBA (1st year), on condition of anonymity said, "I missed some lectures and was told to pay Rs 100. As per our university, we cannot be asked to pay fine. Moreover, we are not even being given the receipt of the fine collected. Clearly the money in unofficially going to the college."

Dr Sandhya Mehta, deputy director, GNIMT, said, "Yes we are collecting fines because the strength of the classes was too low. It is a disciplinary action and I don't there is any other way of increasing strength of classes."

"It is our college norm and written in our prospectus." She refused to comment on whether PTU justified such action.
