GNLU tweaks its rules to admit bright ‘poor’ boy

Changing its rules that denied admission to students who had not cleared their Class X or Class XII examination in one attempt, the Gandhinagar-based Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) has decided to give admission to every deserving student who makes the cut in Common Law Admission Test (CLAT).

The law university on Tuesday apprised the Gujarat High Court (HC) of its decision in connection with the petition filed by a boy, one Donnie Ashok from West Bengal, who was denied admission by the university because he did not clear his Class XII exam in the first attempt.

With GNLU agreeing to modify its rules, Donnie was granted admission into the university and he paid his fees on Tuesday.

The HC disposed of Donnie's petition after GNLU counsel Dharmistha Raval informed the court about the university's policy decision.

Besides Donnie, another student who did not get admission at GNLU because he did not clear his Class XII exam in first attempt had also approached the HC with a similar prayer. But, with GNLU changing its rules, his petition was also disposed of by the court.

GNLU director Bimal Patel had on Monday written to Donnie and asked him to come for admission at the university on Tuesday. Regretting the whole issue, Patel, who was out of station when Donnie was denied admission, said, "If myself and registrar were able to examine his file and if there was little waiting period, this could have been sorted out without causing any inconvenience to anyone."

Donnie could not clear his Class XII examination in first attempt due to paucity of money.

Later, with the help of a voluntary organisation named Increasing Diversity by Increasing Access (IDIA), he paid the fees and clear his Class XII exam.

Subsequently, he also cleared CLAT and ranked high on the list of successful candidates. However, GNLU refused to grant him admission on the ground that he had not cleared his Class XII examination in first attempt.
