TWO police officers, including a DSP, were transferred following protests by Muslim organisations in the state against a raid conducted at a madrasa in December.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Deu Banaulikar and Police Inspector Harish Madkaikar, who had raided a madrasa in the port town of Vasco, were transferred on Wednesday over allegations of harassment of female students at the institution. 88 burkha-clad teenage girls were brought to the police station for verification.

“Prima facie, the officers were found guilty of unnecessarily bringing the girls from the madrasa to the police station. They were shifted from their duties and have been transferred to Goa Reserve Police,” a senior police official stated.

The madrasa management had alleged harassment of the girls by the police and claimed that they had already furnished the verification details of the girls to the police. An inquiry was initiated by the police after Goa Chief Minister Digamber Kamat was petitioned by several organisations protesting the raid.
