The trial in the 2002 Godhra train carnage case began in the designated fast-track court inside Sabarmati Central Jail on Wednesday, six years after the Supreme Court stayed the trial. The stay was lifted early this year. On the first day, apart from examining a witness, the court rejected the bail applications of 48 accused in the case. Special Public Prosecutor J M Panchal said, “Rejecting the bail applications, the court observed that the offence is very serious and so is its impact on society. Moreover, bail was denied as the trial in the case has begun.”
