Gogoi confident of Congress win

Gogoi claimed that Cong would return to form the government for the third consecutive time in Assam.

Tarun Gogoi on Saturday claimed that Congress would return to form the government for the third consecutive time in Assam, where economic condition, law and order situation was considerably improved by it.

“We have our plans and schemes in place to be taken up during our next term,” a confident Gogoi told reporters here.

“The next government, whichever it may be,will be on a better financial ground because of our (Congress government) improving the economic condition of the state and undertaking development schemes.

“The condition now is even better than in 2006. We had inherited Rs 81.90 crore as cash balance in the bank for the state from AGP government in 2001. Today we have raised it to Rs 6410 crore inspite of our investments in economic development activities, welfare measures and others,” he said.

Claiming that the rural economy had improved under his decade-long chief ministership,he said it had resulted in better condition for the farmers.

“If the economy improves the law and order situation also improves. The civilian killings and bomb blasts have come down. Insurgent outfits, including ULFA,have come for peace talks … Though extortions and killings are there in some pockets but by and large they have also come down significantly,” Gogoi said.

On continuing with alliance partner Bodoland Peoples Front after the poll results,he said “If they give us support we will take it. But I don’t think we will need it … Our situation is not so bad.”
