As a founder member of Jalebee Cartel, a live dance music collective, which was formed in 2004, DJ Ash Roy has shared headliner space with the likes of the Prodigy, Modeselektor and Carl Cox. Besides, the vocalist and percussionist has also played with Sasha, Cari Lekebusch, and Fergie individually. However, despite being known as the voice of the band, DJ Ash Roy is out on his own now and is conscentrating on his individual projects and live shows.
Early this year, Roy and other members of the band--Arjun Wagale, Ashvin Mani Sharma and G Force--recognized the stagnancy in their act and decided to try something new. "We had one hour worth of material to play and as we toured different cities and countries all over the world for eight long years, we started to realize how bored we got playing the same stuff over and over again. It was collectively decided that we take time off and come back when we have refreshed our minds with new ideas for new performances," says Roy, who loves playing the tabla and also includes different drum percussions like African djembe, Latin timbale as he simultaneously controls the console during his performances at various venues around the world. He will be performing at Area 51, Baner Road, on September 22, 9 pm onwards.
Roy has recently collaborated with KC Taylor. The two collaborative efforts with Taylor titled 'Hour Glass' and 'Beat Basket' are techno are techno based tracks that are a rage with techno enthusiasts. He is also enthusiastic about inviting international DJs to perform with him in different venues across India or just come to the country to be inspired by the different influences of Indian sounds. "I am a big fan of underground DJs and producers who really come up with fantastic original music. I am not in favour of bringing only big international names to India who basically play 'cheese'," says the DJ, who had recently invited DJ Ambivalent (Minus) from US to perform in Delhi and Mumbai. Roy is also looking forward to his performance at the much anticipated music festival Sunburn, in Noida in October, wherein he will be sharing the techno stage with DJ Arjun and DJ Paul.
