Good behaviour: state asks school to withdraw circular

The education department on Thursday issued a notice to Prime Academy asking it to withdraw its circular instructing students to get an undertaking of good behaviour.

The education department on Thursday issued a notice to Prime Academy asking it to withdraw its circular instructing students to get an undertaking of good behaviour. The school in its circular dated April 2 had also allegedly warned its class X students that if they fail to get the undertaking, they should consider themselves not registered in the school for the next academic year.

The circular stated that it was mandatory for all its class X students to bring along an undertaking of good behaviour sworn by their parents or guardian before a magistrate court. The specimen of the undertaking to be signed too was given to the parents along with the circular.

The education inspector of west zone P R Pawar told Newsline that circular does not come under any rule stipulated by the state education department. “Parents need not sign such undertaking. (We) will not tolerate any such move taken by the school. We saw the circular and have issued two notices— one to the Principal and another to the director of the school— asking them to withdraw the circular within next two days. Failing which we would have to submit a proposal to state government to withdraw the NOC given to ICSE for the schools recognition.”

However, director of the school Chaula Joshi justified the schools decision, saying,“Students in higher classes are very mischievous and are out of control. We can’t even punish them as the parents don’t co-operate with us. We had two-three bad experiences, following which we issued this circular.”

Pawar said,“I have directed the school to punish only those who are mischievous. Penalising all the students and their parents like this is not a solution.”
